The Carbon Lowdown

The Carbon Lowdown

A quick guide to cutting your business footprint

Spoiler: you didn’t quit math class just to suffer through it again at work.

When people think “sustainability"…

…they often picture massive wind farms or rooftop solar panels.

Great ideas, but not exactly what most small or mid-sized businesses can pull off by Friday. The good news? Cutting your footprint doesn’t have to be complicated (or expensive). Here are a few quick wins you can start this week.

1. Kill the energy vampires

Office tech loves to sip power when it’s “off.” Laptops, monitors, printers — they all draw energy in standby mode. Flip the switch at the end of the day (or better yet, use smart power strips) and you’ll see both your carbon and your energy bill shrink.

2. Tame your travel habits

Business travel is a sneaky emissions hog. Before booking a flight, ask: can this meeting be a video call? If you must travel, trains usually beat planes, and economy class is far lighter on emissions than business class.

3. Make your supply chain pull its weight

Not all suppliers are created equal. Choosing partners with greener practices (or even just asking for digital invoices instead of paper) makes a measurable difference. Bonus: it signals to your customers that you care about who you work with.

4. Set office defaults to “green”

Double-sided printing, defaulting to energy-saving modes on devices, using LED lighting — tiny changes add up fast when multiplied across your whole team. Think less “big bang” and more “lots of little sparks.”

5. Start measuring (because what gets measured gets managed)

Even if you’re not ready for a full carbon accounting setup, start by tracking your utilities, travel, and supply costs. You’ll be surprised how quickly patterns — and savings opportunities — jump out.

The takeaway: You don’t need to overhaul your business overnight. Start small, keep it consistent, and let the quick wins stack up. Before you know it, you’ll be making a serious dent in your footprint — and your team will barely notice the effort.
